Chapter Overview

Building on our knowledge of force, we will study Friction. It is a necessary evil that fundamentally opposes mechanical motion. We will explore what causes it, factors affecting it, and how fluids create drag.

5.1 What is Friction?

Definition: Friction is a contact force that opposes the relative motion between any two surfaces in contact. It always acts in the direction opposite to motion.

If you push a heavy wooden box to the right on a floor, the force of friction acts to the left, resisting your push.

5.2 Cause of Friction

Why does friction even exist? It's all because of invisible microscopic bumps.

Microscopic Bumps: Every surface, even those that seem smooth like glass, actually contains countless minute irregularities (tiny microscopic hills and valleys) when seen under a high-power microscope.
Interlocking: When two surfaces are placed in contact, the minute irregularities of one surface closely interlock into the irregularities of the other surface.
Overcoming the Lock: We have to actively apply adequate force to overcome this interlocking to initiate relative motion. Rough surfaces possess a vastly larger number of deep irregularities; hence, friction is much higher on rough surfaces.

5.3 Factors Affecting Friction

The total magnitude of the frictional force depends entirely on two main factors:

The Nature of the Surfaces: Friction is directly proportional to roughness. A smooth marble floor offers much less friction than a rough sandy road.
The Substantial Pressure holding the surfaces together: If you place heavy weight on a sliding object, it presses down harder. The microscopic irregularities interlock much more tightly, dramatically increasing the force of friction.

5.4 Types of Friction

5.5 Friction: A Necessary Evil

Friction behaves in a dual nature. In daily life, it is extremely vital (friend), but inside mechanical systems, it is heavily harmful (foe).

Why Friction is Our Friend (Useful)

Walking: Without strong friction between our rubber shoes and the rough ground, we would constantly slip.
Writing: The friction between a pen tip and paper forcibly grinds off the ink or graphite firmly onto the page.
Driving safely: Rubber tyres grip the asphalt road safely due to friction, actively allowing violent acceleration, sharp turns, and safe braking.
Lighting a Fire: Striking a match head against the rough side of the box uses abrasive friction to intensely ignite the chemical instantly.

Why Friction is a Foe (Harmful)

Severe Wear and Tear: It heavily destroys materials over time. Shoe soles get flat, screws lose their threading, and heavy machine gears grind down strictly due to constant friction.
Massive Energy Loss: When modern engines operate, high friction firmly between moving metal parts actively creates immense toxic heat. This sadly wastes up to 20% of the fuel energy strictly as thermal heat rather than useful mechanical work.

Increasing and Reducing Friction

To Deliberately Increase Friction: We use aggressively rough surfaces.
