📖 PART 1: Importance and Classification of Industries

• Manufacturing industries transform raw materials into finished goods. They drive economic growth, generate employment, and increase exports.
• India's industrial revolution began during British rule — but after Independence, the government promoted industrialisation through Five Year Plans.

🌿 PART 2: Agro-Based Industries

1. Sugar Industry

• Raw material: Sugarcane. A weight-losing industry — sugar content reduces quickly after cutting, so mills must be close to cane fields.
• Location: Originally concentrated in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar (where sugarcane was first grown). Post-independence, shifted to Maharashtra and Karnataka because:
  • Higher sucrose content in Deccan sugarcane (cooler climate).
  • Co-operative sugar factories successfully established in Maharashtra.
  • Crushing season can be longer (drier climate → cane can stand in fields longer).
• By-products: Molasses → alcohol, rum, ethanol (biofuel); Bagasse → paper, particle board, electricity (cogeneration); Press mud → fertiliser.
• India is the world's 2nd largest producer of sugar (after Brazil).

2. Textile Industry

a. Cotton Textile Industry

• Oldest and one of the largest industries in India. India is one of the world's largest producers of cotton yarn and fabrics.
• Mumbai was the original "Cottonopolis of India" / "Manchester of India" — due to availability of raw cotton from Deccan, humid climate (good for spinning), port for exports, finance capital. However, many mills closed (deindustrialisation). Now Ahmedabad is a major cotton textile centre.
• Ahmedabad: "Manchester of India" — close to Gujarat's cotton fields; large mills. Now also Tiruppur (Tamil Nadu — knitwear export hub), Coimbatore, Kanpur, Surat.
• Problems: Competition from power loom and decentralised sector; old mills with obsolete machinery; competition from synthetic fibres (polyester).

b. Silk Textile Industry

• India is the world's 2nd largest producer of silk (after China). The primary silk-producing state is Karnataka (Mysuru — sericulture). Silk is also produced in Assam (Muga and Eri silk), West Bengal, Jharkhand.
• Sericulture (silkworm rearing on mulberry leaves) is a cottage industry providing rural employment.

1. Iron and Steel Industry

• The backbone of modern industrial civilisation — all other industries depend on steel (machines, buildings, ships, railways, automobiles).
• Called a basic industry because it provides the raw material for all other heavy industries.
• Location factors: Proximity to iron ore, coal (coking coal), limestone (flux), water, transport.

2. Petro-Chemical Industry

• Uses petroleum and natural gas as raw materials to produce: plastics, synthetic rubber, synthetic fibres (polyester, nylon), fertilisers (urea), dyes, medicines, paints, detergents.
• The petro-chemical industry requires crude oil from refineries → hence concentrated near refineries and ports.
• Key centres: Mumbai (Trombay), Vadodara (Gujarat — IPCL — India Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd.), Jamnagar (Reliance Refinery — world's largest single-location refinery).

3. Electronics Industry

• Includes computer hardware, software, consumer electronics (TVs, phones), semi-conductors, defence electronics.
• India is a global IT (Information Technology) and software hub. Bengaluru ("Silicon Valley of India") — major hub of IT & electronics exports. Also Hyderabad ("Cyberabad"), Chennai, Pune, Noida.
• Relevance in modern world: The digital economy is central to India's services-led growth. Electronics exports growing rapidly; India is world's 2nd largest mobile phone manufacturer.
